How to Wear Red This Winter

Red may seem more daunting than other wearable colors but it’s a confidence booster, it’s empowering and it’s definitely a show stopper. If you’re nervous, don’t avoid it all together – here are some ways to incorporate the bright hue into your winter wardrobe whether you choose to go subtle or bold.

A Red Bag

If you’re frightened by color, a red bag is only a small detail but it’s eye catching enough and will add a pop of color to an otherwise muted outfit. We all know that denim is basically considered a neutral now (see: beige, gray, black, denim), and that still goes here. Adding some red to a neutral outfit adds a bit of a cool edge.

Loewe Gate Small Shoulder Bag $2,690

Red Boots

Much like a red bag, the pop of red shoes is enough to liven an outfit but not overpower it. Attempting to match your shoes to your outfit is usually a no-no but with red, it just works. Add red shoes to finish off a printed outfit whether its florals or plaid or match them to a sweater or smaller detail like a red lip.

A Red Coat

Coats are a great way to add some color into a darker winter wardrobe. A classic black outfit is the perfect excuse to throw on a bright coat. Try anything from a bright red peacoat to a softer flannel.

Another one I have – Anine Bing Bobbi Flannel Jacket $299

Veronica Beard Miller Dickey Jacket $645

Red Lipstick

While I don’t always reach for vibrant colors when it comes to my clothing, red lipstick has been a staple in my makeup bag for as long as I can remember. Don’t let yourself feel intimidated by the color – it looks best with simplistic bronze makeup and always helps complete a look (see above).

My favorite – MAC Russian Red $18.50

Chanel Rouge Coco Flash in Beat $38

Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips in Carina’s Love $23.81

Red Plaid

Plaid is a Fall/Winter staple every year so why not invest in great pieces that you’ll want to reach for again and again. I tend to go for the more subdued options but the colors could be as bold as you’ll let them.

Coat I’m wearing – Velvet by Graham and Spencer Houndstooth Coat $367
